"Why I Volunteer," Featuring Nicholas Barber & Leanne Brownfield
Giving back is more than an act of service—it’s a commitment to strengthening the places we call home. At Sturgis Bank, we believe that investing in our communities goes beyond financial services, it’s about supporting the people and organizations that make a difference every day. Our Berrien County team lives out this mission through active volunteerism, led by individuals like Leanne Brownfield, AVP and Business Development Specialist, and Nicholas Barber, AVP Retail Sales Manager.
Nicholas Barber: Strengthening Community Through Service
For Nicholas, his dedication to giving back stems from a deep desire to support organizations that work tirelessly to improve the lives of others in the community he loves. "Volunteering makes a huge difference locally, and giving back to those in the community who need it most is incredibly fulfilling," Nicholas said. He believes everyone should play a role in strengthening their neighborhood and being part of that is very rewarding.
Nicholas participates in various community events throughout the year and actively contributes to several organizations, including the Citadel Dance and Music Center and the Boys and Girls Club. He also serves as the Treasurer for the Berrien County Cancer Service (BCCS). For nearly a decade, he and his team at Sturgis Bank have supported the Bowl for a Cure event in Niles. "Hearing cancer survivors share how organizations like BCCS and Bowl for a Cure help our community makes all the time and effort worthwhile," he said. “Local residents coming together to support one another is what creates a strong and vibrant community.”
Leanne Brownfield: Building Connection Through Volunteerism
Leanne’s volunteerism began early in her career, inspired by a manager who encouraged her to get involved. Over the years, her commitment has only deepened. “I enjoy connecting with co-workers and neighbors while working on a project that benefits our community,” she says. "Volunteering fills my cup. I always enjoy doing it and feel great afterwards." With a focus on children, animals, and humanitarian causes, Leanne finds joy in knowing that her efforts directly improve lives.
At the start of 2025, Leanne was named “Ambassador of the Year” by her peers at the Southwest Michigan Chamber’s Business Recognition Awards Ceremony—a testament to her dedication to community engagement. Whether supporting the local arts through the Krasl Art Center, contributing to the Southwest Michigan United Way, or working with the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber of Commerce, she leads with passion and purpose. Leanne actively encourages others to join her efforts, often inviting co-workers to collaborate on projects and involving her husband and daughter in volunteer work outside of the office.
We are grateful to have community leaders like Nicholas and Leanne in our organization, who take the time to strengthen the communities we belong to and encourage others to join our mission.
